The air pocket is for gas exchange. The shell allows the chick to expel carbon dioxide out and get oxygen in! Now you know! (It also allows a certain amount of moisture in.)
The air pocket is simply the top of the egg..... you see… the egg never fills up the shell completely or it would hemorage.... and I should know being raised by wild chickens...(until the age of 16, of course, then got the hell out of there!)

OK Dave, you know what its for.... tell me.... did you learn HOW it was created??? just curious..... is it a barking spider at the top of the egg?....... CAUSE THAT COULD EXPLAIN SOME ODORS created by the overly aged egg or the overly consumed individual.
