The Displaced Ozarkian

Born in Southern California, my family moved to Missouri when I was six. I grew up in rural Southwest Missouri, and ultimately went to school at the University of Missouri - Rolla for a long, long time. I love the Ozarks , but found myself strangely unemployable after going to school for so long. Ironically, I found myself in Northern California. Couldn't stand the city life, so moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains. I'm in my mid-thirties, and have been divorced twice (what's up with that? I don't even believe in divorce). I did get something wonderful from my last marriage: a little girl who spends most of her time with me! After talking with a friend, I decided this would be a good way to vent/detail life as a rural-Ozarkian who's been transplanted into the fast-paced world of the Silicon Valley. And no, I don't think anyone in my family was a Baldknobber . Ok, there may have been a Yocham involved, but there is no record.

After graduation from UCLA in June 1999, I went work for Apple in Cuppertino, and a year later, I changed my job to Nokia in Mountain View. Then at the end of 2001, I came back to Taiwan and worked at a startup making Bluetooth chip until end of 2008. That startup does not do well, but still there.

Now I am working for a company called MStar. That is pretty much what I have been doing since graduation.

Christmas Presents

Raisin' a Mountain Girl

I gave Annie what my warped brain thinks is a really cool present for Christmas: a microscope. I think it is awesome, and she seems to as well, but she might just be being polite. At any rate, we spent hours on Christmas Day looking at various things. Mostly, we looked at the prepared slides that were included as a free gift with the microscope. The scope can connect to the computer, but they neglected to include the right software, so I have to take care of that. However, I managed to find a driver that allows for a connection with another program. Here is a picture from the microscope and 100x magnification of part of a flea. Don't let this give you nightmares...

We are going to cultivate some water samples to see what we can see from things like the San Lorenzo River, and hopefully the ocean... This thing rocks...

Geek, and proud of it...
